How is this possible when the main selling point they're pushing is that it can and should be used underwater? It's one thing if it is just supposed to be overly resistant to that stuff but you can't have an Aqua camera mode and not expect people to use it under water and then void their damn warranty. Unacceptable.

Really. If they're demoing it and selling as underwater-capable, it sounds like the UCC's "Fitness for a Particular Purpose"1 implied warranty would come into play here.
[1] I'll admit that I just did a Wikipedia lookup to find this, after getting a tingle in the back of my brain that something like this existed. YMMV, IANAL, Etc.

Also the warranty DOES NOT, I REPEAT, DOES NOT COVER WATER!!!!
Pretty sure this entire thread is just FUD.
Let me get this straight. The device has an IP67 certification which is an ingress standard that states the device can be submerged to a depth of 1 METRE for 30 MINUTES, among other things. Samsung advertises it as being able to take video and photos underwater.
Are you seriously claiming that their warranty would not cover submergence in water when they clearly advertise that the device carries IP67 certification and can be used to take photos and video underwater?
If this were true, Samsung would EASILY and OBVIOUSLY be sued over falsely representing their product in advertisements and not providing a product that lives up to advertised purpose. It wouldn't even take a single heart beat.
I highly doubt that this claim regarding Samsung's warranty is correct. The people showing excerpts from Samsung's standard warranty may have uncovered an embarrassing inconsistency with the way this device is expected to be used, but it's only a standard warranty that hasn't been customised for this device, and there's no way Samsung would not honor a warranty related to using the phone clearly in a way it's intended to be used.
At least, that's my call. Otherwise, it would just be too easy for Samsung to lose the right to advertise it as submersible or IP67.

Screenshot from the user manual I got from this site: http://i.imgur.com/JMmQoP6.jpg
Whether that could hold at all given that they have advertised submersible as a feature is one thing (I can't see how they could get away with it, personally, but I know nothing about relevant laws), hell, it might not even be intended (it could just be a case of "oops we forgot to change the standard document" type of fuck up. But the OP seems to have got the facts right as it currently stands.

[–]neon_overloadGalaxy Note 2 49 points 28 days ago
Well that seems like a pretty embarrassing oversight on Samsung's part but I have to assume that it's just a standard warranty term that is not specific to the S4 Active, and they've simply failed to adjust the term for a device that they do intend to be submersed in water.
At any rate, statutory warranties would force the manufacturer to cover using it for its stated, advertised purpose.
It's possible Samsung will make a statement somewhere to clarify this discrepancy.

I just want to point out that water resistant is a pretty broad phrase. My watch is "water resistant" up to 100m and I would never second guess myself taking it into a pool. Almost nothing is ever advertised as being waterproof, because labeling it as resistant removes liability in case something goes wrong.

No major reason really. It is still as powerful and the camera isnt a huge issue for me. The camera is still a huge step up from what I came from which was an Atrix 4G. I liked the dust proof aspect more then anything though. I hate getting dust built up in the headphone jack of phones. I have had it about a month or so and gotten it pretty wet. I just never dunked it in a fish tank or anything like that.

That's why Samsung specifically added water mode software to the active.
Touch screen doesn't work submerged so the aqua mode makes the volume keys function as a shutter button.
If they did not mean for this device to work under a couple of feet underwater, they would not have made that software change.
Adding that software implies intent of standard use IMHO.

The phone is IP67 certified which means it can be submerged up 1 meter for 30 minutes. There is plenty of evidence online that proves that it is capable of this. There are probably just some GS4 Actives out there that are defective and are not as water resistant as others.

And we don't know where the problem lies. I don't think Samsung has a team of evil masterminds reading this thread and saying "everything has gone exactly as planned". In terms of marketing:
Splash proof: what everyone else below thinks water resistant means - can't be damaged by splashes of water.
Water resistant: resisting water to some degree beyond splash proofing. This is usually in the form of an IP rating. E.g. the Xperia Z is certified to last for up to 30 minutes in up to 1 metre of water.
Water proof: They can say the phone is waterproof if it has a IPX8 rating, which means that it's certified to last indefinitely in any depth of water. You still have to cover all ports etc.
Phones will never be "truly" waterproof. There will always be port covers you have to seal. The warranty will never cover water damage. IP68 is the closest you can get.

[–]slevin22 40 points 28 days ago
Photographer here, I regularly view my photos on industry standard calibrated equipment.
After viewing them on an AMOLED screen, I have noticed that although AMOLED screens look nice, displaying deep blacks and vibrant colors, these representations are nowhere near accurate. Specifically, you will find that the greens are heavily over stated and that the darker gray colors nearing black are not nearly as dark as they should be resulting in a sudden and in my opinion unacceptable drop off to the black/off state. This often reveals jpeg compression as it occurs primarily in the darkest regions of photos and has made me look silly on multiple occasions when I have been asked for sample images on the spot and have had to display them on my phone.
In other words, it's a coin toss. Brighter images with not as sensitive color tones in them will display nicer on AMOLED but dark images with smooth tonality will look entirely unappealing.
TFT or regular LED backlit displays will give you more consistent and accurate results but may not give you the dark blacks you crave.

Learned this the hard way myself. The irony is, as the AT&T representative was telling me that my warranty was void because of water damage, she was sitting right in front of a 10' x 5' advertisement with a picture of my phone in a fishbowl. I submerged in half a glass of water for five seconds. Killed it. They accredited to user error. I'm a divemaster who has serviced hundreds of regulators. It's IP67 rated to 1 meter. It wasn't user error. Both AT&T and Samsung tout it as waterproof. It's not misleading advertising, it's utterly false.

I work in the warranty dept. for AT&T. Well I actually work for a 3rd party that works for AT&T but nonetheless I have to say that this is not a Samsung issue. I was chosen to be apart of a single focus group with 4 other colleagues of mine to discuss how to handle this GODDAMN NIGHTMARE coming our way. I questioned the phone actually being "Waterproof" and asked about the commercial and how it would be perceived. We take phone calls everyday and knew this bullshit was gonna happen. Samsung looked up with a Smirk on her face, looked at me, then looked at Mr. AT&T's right hand and said "I have no clue why they are calling it waterproof, it's not waterproof, it's water resistant". We all looked at each other not surprised and kind of laughed getting this kind of answer. Mr. AT&T's right hand of Bullshit looked at her and tried to talk around it being waterproof. The meeting went like that for awhile but ultimately ended with "we know you're gonna get calls on this". Keep in mind that AT&T can advertise the phone the way they want to and Samsung just makes the phone. This is an AT&T marketing fuck up and they are too big to say so.
IN SHORT: AT&T FUCKED UP WITH THAT COMMERCIAL NOT SAMSUNG

I know it's crazy. I buy waterproof cameras and then want to show my friends that it is water proof so I take a few pictures underwater.
The camera then breaks but I guess I'm the asshole for pushing it to its limits. /s
They make waterproof cameras that are waterproof. I just threw mine in a bucket of water. It works fine. This ATT issue is not the consumers fault.
Edit: I don't get my cell information from commercials. So I know that water resistant does not equal water proof but after looking at the commercials ATT clearly says waterproof in some of their ads.

There are several certification, like how a phone can be submerged for up to 30 minutes on a pool 1 meter deep or something like that. At least that's how it is with the Xperia line, there are no water proof Xperias but they advertise as being able to take pics under water. They are water resistant.

There are rules to this feature as well. I can get the specifics on this tomorrow directly from guides provided to us and relay them. What it comes down to when talking about all this. The commercial does not represent what is needed to be done to keep the phone working well with these features. First time I saw the commercial, I laughed and was like "fuck me right".

What? Samsung have this phone depicted submerged on their website. This is the UK site but whatever.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/smartphones/android/GT-I9295ZAABTU
And I'm pretty sure AT&T wasn't the one who put a feature called Aqua Mode in the phone for — in Samsung's own words — underwater capture.

From samsung's website:
†The Galaxy S4 Active has an Ingress Protection rating of IP67. This means complete protection from dust ingress and temporary protection from immersion into water to a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. In order to protect against water ingress, the back cover and USB port cover must be correctly sealed. The device must be rinsed in clean water after exposure to salt water.

In order to protect against water ingress, the back cover and USB port cover must be correctly sealed.
This is an important sentence in their site that could have prevented all this shit if Samsung had given it more exposure. The OP mentions that the flooding seems to have happened via the USB port, so if Samsung had given the above instruction in their marketing also, and provided some way to get it "correctly sealed", this whole debacle could have been minimized greatly.

Water resistant means more than just splash resistant. It can also mean shallow submersion for short durations. You can't leave it in a bowl of water overnight, and you can't dive to the bottom of the pool with it for any length of time.
It's like things that are fire resistant. They slow down the fire, but they don't stop it.

The feature can be done but you have to seal the phone the right way. One error made when sealing and that could be it for the phone. Also I was told that if the phone can still die from this feature but should be fine if left to dry for 12 hrs or so. Sketchy at best. I'll put it this way. I will not buy any phone in hopes that I'll be able to submerge it. I know from this side of the fence that it's just not worth the trouble.

If it's so easy to fuck up the water proofing aspect then Samsung shouldn't have included the feature at all. Instead they should have just made a claim that it's more water resistant than the last model or competing models (if that's even the case here...)

But the point is your story implies that AT&T is the only one pushing the idea that the phone can and should be used to take photos/videos fully submerged in water. From your post:
Samsung looked up with a Smirk on her face, looked at me, then looked at Mr. AT&T's right hand and said "I have no clue why they are calling it waterproof, it's not waterproof, it's water resistant".
I assume "water resistant" is supposed to mean you can get it wet but the phone shouldn't be operated for longer periods of time under water. But Samsung's website says:
Take your phone under the surface and capture a different world. With the Galaxy S4 Active, you can shoot and record underwater.
temporary immersion in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes
Maybe we need to clarify what the Samsung rep in your story means by "water resistant."

Also, Samsung's own website states "The Galaxy S4 Active has an Ingress Protection rating of IP67. This means complete protection from dust ingress and temporary protection from immersion into water to a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes."
IANAL but if these devices cannot be immersed in water with a depth of 1 meter or less for up to 30 minutes and all of the literature and advertising material surrounding the devices says they can, SAMSUNG AND AT&T falsely advertised the devices.

The "water resistant" line is such bullshit. My watch says it's only "water resistant", but I've taken it swimming for hours and it functions perfectly. While it's fine in general for Samsung to cover itself using that wording (to protect against the guy who takes it scuba diving), that does not excuse complete failure of the phone when submerged as done in an advertisement.

Nonetheless, Samsung intended it to be used under water, "Aqua Mode lets you take pictures under water." (Taken from Samsung's website) If the phone can't even handle a fish tank and he is not the only one having the problem, than this is still deceptive on Samsung's part. You cant just say your product will do anything, you have to actually deliver. I'm not saying that AT&T shouldn't shoulder some of the blame, but it is Samsung's product and they did say you could use it underwater.

We already knew this a month ago.
Edward Baig from USA Today tested his review unit in a pool and it failed.
Shortly after I took the phone for a dip (in not very deep water), the display went kaput — at least for several hours. It lit up just long enough to indicate that I had power, but I couldn't actually keep the display on and use it.
Roughly a day later, the screen came alive again, but the phone was still exhibiting finicky behavior, presumably because of water damage. The touch-screen was messed up and the device acted as if headphones were plugged in when they weren't. If this were my actual phone, I'd return to the store for a replacement.

We sell the sony Xperia at TMobile and I am hesitant to even mention the water resistance.... Then the put giant posters in the store of it in water.
It seems to seal up tight and I've had 0 problems, but the fact they put a water indicator in every flap scares me. There is one in the Sim tray, headphone area, charging port, and in the micro SD slot.
The main thing is that the touchscreen does funny things when wet. Using it wet or underwater is almost impossible.

It is water resistant in < three feet of water for up to 30 minutes.
Or so the fine print says. Regardless, I have no need to take videos or pictures under water so I would never buy it or the Active anyway.
Keep technology above ground IMO. Electricity and water never mix.

The number one reason for smart phone breakage is water damage. Modern smartphones are perfect for finally creating a water proof phone because of their limited buttons and ports.
This is a product that almost everybody wants and it should not be difficult. This is just samsung taking shortcuts rather than a issue with the concept.

I can agree with that. Maybe I just wouldn't go out of my way to find a device with it's main selling point being "water resistant."
No one ever asks about the Xperia's 13 mega-pixel camera/great display/ect. They only ask about the fact that "it can be dropped in water, right?"

[–]DaGetzHTC One 10 points 28 days ago
Yeah. I think what people want is their S4/One to be water proof. Again, should be easy. You don't need a usb port anymore. Wifi transfer and inductive charging work very well. While some people prefer having a phone that they can open the current trend is uni body designs to keep the phone skinnier. This works excellently for waterproofing. The only button on the phone is the lock/unlock button.
I think a lot of people just want a smartphone top of the line smart phone that they feel they can actually use. I don't think there is a big market for underwater videos but i do think there is a massive market for piece of mind

From http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/smartphones/android/GT-I9295ZAABTU :
Freedom to live outside the boundaries
• Be protected from dust and water damage†
• Capture photos and video underwater
• Use a range of great smart services
• Enjoy powerful Quad Core performance
Then further down:
"IP67 rating means complete protection from dust ingress, and temporary immersion in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes.†''
and then:
Capture your underwater story instantly.
Take your phone under the surface and capture a different world. With the Galaxy S4 Active, you can shoot and record underwater. New Aqua Mode allows you to capture your underwater adventures with optimised clarity. Instead of using the touchscreen, just push a volume key to snap an aquatic shot. The Galaxy S4 Active lets you dive in and capture all of your underwater moments with no hassle.

Everyone with an S4 should take pictures underwater and break their phones then make a big shindig on the news and win a cool $3.50 from when you win a class action lawsuit.
permalink
[–]MzScarlet03 9 points 28 days ago
Not gonna happen. Supreme Court has ruled Samsung and AT&T's arbitration clauses bar class actions and there are very few ways around it. The class actions you see now for phones are for phones that were released before the manufacturers added the arbitration clause to their terms and service. For the Samsung Galaxy S line, Samsung added the arbitration clause beginning with the S2.
Please call your representatives and tell them how much you disagree with the Supreme Court and tell them you want them to support legislation to overturn ATT vs Concepcion.
Also, if enough S4 customers sign up for arbitration, it could put pressure on Samsung to change their advertising or add disclaimers.

Funny, I just checked how they're marketing it here in Finland. At verkkokauppa.com, they state the following:
In addition the phone is IP67 certified so the water and sand of a beach are no problem. [...] The phone can withstand being a meter deep in water for half an hour. Underwater the volume button works as the shutter button so you can also take photos while diving.
If after all that talk the warranty didn't cover water damage, I'd raise hell.

The warranty has nothing to do with this here in Finland, because if they're advertising it as waterproof, Kuluttajavirasto (Competition and Consumer Authority) would be on their ass on the spot if they said they can't give you a new device. You would almost certainly get your money back or another phone.
EDIT: I just did some googling and found this: http://www.kuluttajavirasto.fi/fi-FI/arkisto/2013/?groupId=8e80efb7-7d00-4aa8-a422-b9b58f4f441b&announcementId=c4dff46d-d16c-40bf-a3f8-372b136275a2
It mentions that if the phone doesn't live up to the claims it is considered defective and that you can't exclude water damage from the warranty if it's a waterproof phone

Depends on the country you live in, but that's the case here in Finland, and I would guess in most other countries since waterproofness is a major selling point. You should still look up your country's consumer protection laws before dipping it in water.

And for Samsung to think it's not okay to only half-ass make a product. Surely they have enough money, time and brain-power to make this device properly water resistant.
After reading quite a few stories with this phone, it seems to be that the water resistance is there a flip of a coin. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Sure it's a million times better than the normal S4 in this regard but it's not something you want to rely on to work.

This Limited Warranty does not cover: (a) defects or damage resulting from accident, misuse, abnormal use, abnormal conditions, improper storage, exposure to liquid, moisture, dampness, sand or dirt, neglect, or unusual physical, electrical or electromechanical stress;

This reminds me of a friend my dad once had. The guy was a contractor or something. Anyway, way back when, a truck company, I think it was Ford, has a commercial about how their trucks were so tough you could drop them from a crane so high and they'd still be fine.
This guy buys the 4wd model and the first thing he died is take it to his construction site and recreate the commercial, destroying his truck. He loads the pieces and hauls it back to the dealer, demanding a refund. Dealer refuses staying that in the commercial it was the 2wd model. The commercial didn't say which model it was. Guy got another truck AND his money back.

This never happened. I refuse to believe that anybody stupid enough to go out and buy a truck based on a commercial that shows a scenario that would never fucking happen during normal use of the vehicle, recreate it, destroy their truck, and the manufacturer actually honors his stupidity by giving him a replacement, and his money back.

Interestingly enough, though it's not advertised as such, the Motorola phones have a hydrophobic coating on their circuit boards, and should have no problem at all in the shallow depths of a fish tank. When I went out on a river once, I put my Droid 4 in a ziploc bag to keep the water out. I accidentally instead zipped it up with water in the bag. I wasn't too happy when I opened the bag to take my phone out, and a couple of ounces of water poured out. Luckily, the phone was perfectly fine. I just shook out the keyboard and went right on taking pictures.

I work at Best Buy Mobile, and let me tell you, when we saw the commercial we all flipped shit. You're absolutely right, but the ads just play it up way too much. It's like the S4, but with a little more water resistance.
I'm glad this was top of my front page, people need to realize that, just like any other spec of a phone, it all comes down to how you use it and how lucky/unlucky you are!

I have an S4A and I have used it in the fish tank multiple times. The rubber seals on both the back and the USB door have worked the way they are supposed to. Are you sure the USB door was completely closed and the rubber seal was completely intact?

From Samsung's own website:
Capture your underwater story instantly.
Take your phone under the surface and capture a different world. With the Galaxy S4 Active, you can shoot and record underwater. New Aqua Mode allows you to capture your underwater adventures with optimised clarity. Instead of using the touchscreen, just push a volume key to snap an aquatic shot. The Galaxy S4 Active lets you dive in and capture all of your underwater moments with no hassle.
IP67 rating means complete protection from dust ingress, and temporary immersion in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes.†
Strange what companies can get away with...

Two things here that need to be cleared up because even OP has things wrong.
1: The phone is IP67 rated. It's water resistant. No where in any literature does it state it's waterproof. If the phone was water proof it would hold an IP68 rating. Even said, IP67 certification is very strict. If it states the phone can survive 30 minutes at 1.4psi of water pressure (1m), it can.
2: The rubber flappy door covering the USB does not provide any water resistance. It's a dust cover to keep dirt out of the tiny port so you can charge the phone without having to clean it out. The USB port itself is water sealed just like the headphone jack.
3: For water to be leaking out of the USB port as OP stated, it was damaged. Damaged how? Pressure on the port while plugged into the USB charging cable. For example, putting the phone on your bed while plugged in and sitting on it. It may show zero signs of damage, zero "looseness" in the port, and act completely normal, but you damaged the internal gasket by putting stress on it. 1.4psi of water pressure finds EVERY hole and crack. It will find leaks that you couldn't even see that were possible.
As an S4 Active owner that his phone gets wet DAILY (I'm on boats every day in and out of the water) I have zero issues with my device as long as you abide by the rules of the IP67 rating and do not harm or damage the sealing surfaces in any way. Seriously, my phone practically lives in water.
Samsung knows there will be failures, and they also know 100% of all water intrusion failures will be from user inflicted damage or from people exceeding the limitations of the unit. They will not do anything or change any of their advertisements because the phone can do and will do everything they advertise for the life of the unit. I guarantee you every S4 Active failure if investigated will be found to be a failure caused by damage. A simple 2ft drop to the floor that shows zero damage to the unit pretty much 100% compromise the seals and the unit will leak in water. It's not a durable device. It's not tougher than a standard S4. It's just water resistant. If anything it's actually more fragile than a standard S4 due to it's tighter tolerances.

Throwaway for I work for AT&T and I could get fired if they found out I did all this.
I posted this on XDA as well so refer to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44055783#post44055783
This phone is not truly waterproof/resistant!!!!!
First off I want to start this off buy saying a few things. I work for AT&T so before anyone says its from improper usage remember I had to watch training videos on how to properly use it. Also, before anyone says well, you aren't really supposed to be using it in the water, you are wrong. The first thing we are trained on is how to properly close the back cover and how to show the customers Aqua mode to take pictures underwater. We actively use this as a main selling point, this is per Samsung.
Here is my story. I bought the Active on Thursday. The first thing I did with it was ensure the back was closed and made a video in my fish tank so I could show customers how it works underwater, and how good aqua mode is. That worked out perfectly except the video was a little dark, so I figured I would retake it.
In this time I had a customer swap out the phone they bought because it were defective, the bottom buttons stopped working on it. She was very vague when the water question came up but I thought nothing of it.
Now cue today. It was sunny outside so I thought it was the perfect time to reshoot the fish tank video. I ensured the back was secure, yes, including pressing down on the back where the AT&T logo is. I then submerged the phone in the tank while taking the video. Almost instantly the phone screen went black and said dock mode was enabled so I took the phone out of the water and everything went back to normal. I double checked the USB rubber to be sure. I just chalked it up to the phone doing crazy things in the water. I have read almost everywhere that the phone will say headphones are plugged in, etc. So I thought this was normal. I then put it back in and took a minute long video. Everything was fine. I even played back the video and it was fully working.
This is where everything went wrong. About 2 minutes later the phone started tweaking out, Google now opened on its own and the buttons were really sensitive. Then the buttons completely stopped working other than the power button and that's when I freaked out. I opened the battery cover and there it was, everything was soaked. but luckily none of the water damage indicators were colored. I then opened the USB door and it was like a fountain, so that's where the breach happened. The flimsy, rubber USB door. I did not tell a soul what happened and went back to work and swapped it for a regular Galaxy S4.
So please listen to my warning. There are way too many people getting this phone damaged, including me, a fully trained AT&T employee who took the proper precautions before doing anything.
Samsung should not be able to get away with calling this phone water resistant or water proof, and they should especially not include an Aqua Camera mode.
Also the warranty DOES NOT, I REPEAT, DOES NOT COVER WATER!!!!
I want Samsung to see this, we seriously can't have them get away with the advertising on this phone, there are way too many cases of this phone getting damaged with correct usage!
